LIVING WELL AND LONG : GOD'S PLAN 3 from Mike Oye's blog

Coconut is a very popular fruit in the tropics. It is abundant along the coasts, but can also be found in plantations and compounds upland. When the fruit is still young, the natives enjoy the sweet juice (coconut water) and pulpy endocarp (flesh). The mature fruit has a thick flesh and very little ‘water’, with most of the rich contents of the ‘water’ absorbed into the flesh.

The fruit is abundant in minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients and has been used over the centuries to treat many ailments internally and externally. Let us consider the ‘water’ today.

This is one of the most nutritious, wholesome beverages provided by nature. Coconut water is very rich in dietary fiber, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and calcium. Other minerals present include iron, phosphorus, zinc, copper, selenium, and sodium. These minerals are in the form of electrolytes and get into the blood stream easily. Prominent vitamins include vitamin C, riboflavin, thiamin, B6, folate, niacin, pantothenic acid, and choline. It also has a high content of the amino-acids arginine, glutamic acid, phenylalanine, alanine, serine, glycine, valine, lysine, leucine, aspartic acid, proline, and threonine. Moderate amounts of methionine, cystine, tyrosine, histidine, and tryptophan are also present. The carbohydrate content is high, including sugars; it has little amounts of protein and saturated fats. It is extremely low in cholesterol. Phytonutrients include cytokinins, which are plant growth hormones similar to human growth hormones.

As a result of this array of contents, it is not surprising that coconut water has the following life-regenerating properties and benefits:

1. It is a natural energy drink, because of its sugars and fats.

2. Its richness in minerals makes it close in composition to human blood plasma, and has therefore been used widely as a very effective rehydration fluid (both orally and intravenously).

3. It is effective in the treatment of kidney and urethral stones; thus, its proper use may make dialysis unnecessary.

4. It promotes proper digestion and helps in gallbladder disease.

5. It serves as a natural drink for infants suffering from intestinal disturbances.

6. It strengthens the heart and improves blood circulation, thereby normalizing blood pressure and helping in the healing of diabetes.

7. It is excellent for the treatment of cholera, particularly because of the presence of the minerals and albumen.

8. It helps to prevent osteoporosis by facilitating the absorption of calcium and magnesium.

9. It is antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal. As a result, it helps the body to fight viruses that cause flu, herpes, hepatitis, measles, and AIDS; it helps in the healing of candida yeast infections and inhibits the growth of mycoplasma and eczema.

10. It promotes healthy thyroid functions and generally relieves stress on the endocrine system.

11. It is capable of reducing pressure in the eyes and, therefore, helps with glaucoma.

12. It destroys intestinal worms.

13. It is useful in cancer therapy, because of its antioxidants.

14. It is the richest natural dietary source of cytokinins, which selectively destroy malignant cancer cells and promote the growth of healthy cells.

15. Cytokinins in coconut water can also promote youthfulness and prolong age.

16. Coconut water will help to destroy bad cholesterol and preserve good cholesterol in the body.

I hope those of us in the tropics, who pass by sellers of whole fresh coconuts, will from now pay attention, buy the fruit, and at least drink the tasty juice. When you read the next article on COCONUT ‘MEAT’, I bet you will run for the solid part of the fruit as well. Until then, keep fit.
