  • Should a believer wear or get tattoos?

    These are my thoughts...

    Law versus Grace

Law says 'don't do this or that'. If you disobey, you've sinned and would face whatever consequence or penalty immediately. If penalty isn't death, you need to do the necessary sacrifice to be cleansed. Being saved rests entirely on you - how much you can obey the law and sacrifice when you err.

Grace says 'believe in me and you would be made righteous'. Believing in God through your acceptance of Jesus would translate to true love and subsequently obedience to God (ie your works). Once you stop believing, you fall out of grace and ultimately go back to the path of destruction. Being saved rests on your faith (however small) in Jesus. If you lack faith, no salvation o. The beauty of this era is that the grace that saved you in the first instance is ever there to keep you till the very end!

How does this relate to tattoos?
The truth is this: under grace, your tattoo wearing does not affect God or your salvation! HOWEVER, the motive for getting the tattoo matters a lot to God and the effect it has on your brother/sister in Christ is considered by God. Is it borne out of love for God and for your brother/sister in Christ? Is it expedient?

I personally don't like it, can't have one ever, feel repulsed by it on people and pray that none of my kids ever get one. But I'm working on myself not to allow this affect my relationship with a believer who has one because God hasn't called us to judge one another on issues as trivial as this.

Romans 14 fully explains and gives a concise answer to issues like this. I would advice that we all go, read and meditate over the entire chapter for a better understanding. Paul consistently 'fought' against legalism in his time. Although he gave out instructions to the churches he wrote to about how believers should conduct themselves among unbelievers and believers alike. He never made it sound as if those instructions were a requirement to making heaven. He was the advocate for the non-Jews. This was why despite the agreement the church elders had in Acts 15 (please read it) about not eating food offered to idols and co, he still went ahead to write all he wrote and insinuated that it didn't matter to the Romans in Romans 14. Not to say Paul didn't agree or accept that decision in Acts 15, it actually shows that the 'law' as most of us see it isn't what determines whether something is a sin or not.

I close with these verses in Romans 14:17-23(AMP). You can even superimpose the 'food and drink' with 'tattoos'.

17 for the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking [what one likes], but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

18 For the one who serves Christ in this way [recognizing that food choice is secondary] is acceptable to God and is approved by men.

19 So then, let us pursue [with enthusiasm] the things which make for peace and the building up of one another [things which lead to spiritual growth].

20 Do not, for the sake of food, tear down the work of God. All things indeed are [ceremonially] clean, but they are wrong for the person who eats and offends [another’s conscience in the process].

21 It is good [to do the right thing and] not eat meat or drink wine, or do anything that offends your brother and weakens him spiritually.

22 The faith which you have [that gives you freedom of choice], have as your own conviction before God [just keep it between yourself and God, seeking His will]. Happy is he who has no reason to condemn himself for what he approves.

23 But he who is uncertain [about eating a particular thing] is condemned if he eats, because he is not acting from faith. Whatever is not from faith is sin [whatever is done with doubt is sinful].
